Cory Lidle 1972-2006

Cory Lidle did his best Thurman Munson impression today. No, not the part where Thurman Munson was an all-star catcher, I meant the part where Cory Lidle crashed an airplane and killed himself.

Well, himself and three other people, who were apparently inside the luxury high-rise condo that Lidle crashed into.

You know that had to be a horrible moment for New Yorkers, considering the first thing I saw when I turned on ESPN to watch "Around the Horn" was a burning high-rise building in Manhattan. It seems crass to be thankful that it was just a freak accident, but consider what it could've been.

He played for 7 Major League teams over 9 seasons, with a career record of 82-72, with a 4.57 ERA. He leaves behind a wife and a child. Our sympathies go out to his family and teammates.

EDIT: 5:34 PM - The story so far is Lidle and a passenger died in the crash, and two people in the building were injured. Lidle is confirmed dead.

EDIT: 12:15 AM - The passenger was Lidle's flight instructor.

It's on record here that I am not exactly a Lidle fan, but good gawd, it's a terrible thing. I feel most for his wife and son; imagine getting off your airplane only to be told that your husband died in his.

The whole incident has brought back major Thurman Munson flashbacks for me. I cried like a baby when I found out Munson was dead--he was such a lively character that the thought of him not actually being alive was just mind-blowing. He was also such an integral part of the Yankees that it was like losing a family member. Substitute Derek Jeter for Cory Lidle and you'd get an idea of what the impact was. I can imagine the deja vu-ness has to be making itself felt in the Yankees organization. Somehow I don't see any future players being allowed to fly their own planes anymore.

You'd think that after the first Yankee to die in a plane crash that they'd put that rider in everyone's contract. It seems obvious.

1. Don't play basketball (the Aaron Boone rule)

2. Don't drive a motorcycle (the Jay Williams rule)

3. Don't fly a fucking airplane

4. Don't drink & shoot (Jayson Williams)

The part that gets me is that he was headed here to Nashville. I don't know what to say, really. It's about the same location that the late Patsy Cline was headed also. Union Station. I don't know what his family or NYC is feeling right now. But Lidle, even as much as I ragged him, was a friend of NashVegas because of the poker games he had around here and his visits on 2nd Ave. RIP, man.
