The joy of the offside rule

Why do stupid people exist? All they do is fuck things up and piss me off. Right now, they're all in a rage about the Dutch destruction of Italy in last night's European Cup match. Specifically, they're angry that the Netherlands' first goal was allowed. Ruud van Nistelrooy appeared to be offside when he tapped the ball into the back of the Italian net, but closer examination revealed that one of Italy's defenders, Christian Pannucci, was in front of him when the goal was scored, albeit behind the goal line and therefore not of the field of play.

The Thickos (many of whom are probably Italian) are now protesting that Panucci, as a result of being off the pitch, couldn't be considered active, so van Nistelrooy must have been offside.

While this is an interesting interpretation of the laws of the game, it's also complete shit. Panucci fell over and went off the field of play. If he wanted to get up and get back on the pitch, he could. Therefore, he's active. It's not rocket science, is it? If we say defenders can play the opposition offside by simply stepping off the pitch, they'll all be doing it. Before we know it, the full of extent of tactics and strategy will be boiled down to an oversized round of The Hokey Cokey.

The Italian didnt leave the field on purpose, but as a result of an injury. The rules that govern that, which are not new but have been around for 40 years, say that a player must seek the ref's permission before leaving the field 'if possible'. The 'if possible' part refers to just such scenarios - he cannot halt his fall over the line in midair to ask the ref if he can leave the field. Its the same when someone tries to stop a ball going out and slides off the field. In this case the Italian also couldnt come back onto the field as he was injured. He was thus out of play. And no, you cannot leave the field of play to deliberately intefere with the course of play (i.e: play someone offside) - that is, and always has been, a foul. Everybody is trying to get smart about the laws, which are clear - the dutch were offside. Fuck you, and fuck your stupid site that has fuckall of interest!

You are a cretin. The Italian defender fell over. Do you expect the ref to stop the match to check if he's okay? Surely, he could feign injury to make van Nistelrooy offside. Proper referees, people who know the rules (i.e. not you) have agreed that the goal was onside. You are clearly devoid of any intelligence, which is demonstrated explicitly by your opening line. I am 100% certain that you are far, far stupider than I. Even if it was offside (which it wasn't), the next two goals most certainly weren't. Italy were absolutely shit, and that's fucking hilarious. I was one of two people in a little bar at the movie theater Monday watching that game, and when van Nistrlrooy booted that goal I jumped off my stool and cheered. I hate Italy.

heheh...Italy are obviously as un-organized as it gets...without Fabio Cannavaro in the defense lineup...he is the marshal...and without defense, Italy are NOBODY....

Netherlands played a good game that day and good goals...they were a much better team than the world champions on that day in all aspects...

1 year ago UEFA made his statement about a similar situation occurred in italy, where the last defendant was not on the ground. Player can't set the offside by simply leaving the field so the goal was regular.

But as a memo, they profetically figured the Panucci situation: infact UEFA told to italian referees that offside can be assigned only when last defendant falls out of the field injured.

This is a fact.

Do you know why it is so? A player can withdraw himself out of the field (and must wait the referee permission to get back, or he will punished with a yellow card).

We can debate if panucci was faking or not, but he coudn't join the action anymore, since he got out after a violent stroke.

Once again, UEFA predicted this circumstance, and told to italian referees that this is the only case where a player can't be considered a defendant anymore.

So we have OFFSIDE.

Lorenzopode, thank you for a well weighted and considered counter argument, but I still have to disagree. I think the laws of the game are clearly open to interpretation in this respect, and on this occasion, I have to side with the referees. UEFA's general secretary said, "Even though he had fallen off the pitch his position was still relevant for the purposes of the offside law."

I understand what you're saying, but I think since the whole incident happened in the same passage of play, the goal should stand. If Buffon booted the ball upfield to his forwards and Panucci remained on the ground, then he could be considered inactive.

Clearly, a more stringent and precise rule needs to be created for this situation.

Regardless of whether it was offside or not, Italy have been underperforming in this tournament, and this goal is the least of their problems. Still, you should be happy they're even there. Us poor England fans have to put up with the shower of shit that can't even qualify for the tournament.

Italy didn't play well, and we all know that our team has not that great defence we had during WC 2006, neither a valid attack configuration to coun on.

Netherlands was superior, and final result is truthful.

I agree with most of your consideration, expecially with the one about interpretation.

In my opinion, referees didn't make any interpretation, and they applied a rule I consider good and proper, but only when a player walk off the pitch during a goal action.

That was a very particular situation, where last defender is on the ground, off the pitch, soon after a collision.

He was not 'walking' out of the field, he couldn't predict any goal, he wasn't taking any advantage, he simply went down. Just for that, common sense would call him out of the game.

The same common sense we have seen in Holland players, when they looked at the linesman before exult.
For the same reason UEFA considered the rule incomplete, as long as they figured a defender falling out of the field injured as an exception of the article, according to interpretation and common sense.

We could discuss for ages, and I respect every opinion, but I would appreciate a more honest behaviour from UEFA, which should admit the particolarity of the case and explain why there was offside despite the exception. Then I would be happy to say: "OK, it was offside".

More:

UEFA is claiming that our first goal with Romania was offside, when the referee himself is admitting his error.

First goal can make the difference in any situation, even with a stronger or a waker team. Should I accept the UEFA behavior?
