Fumble Lost

I've lacked in postings for a while. I slacked off. I got sick, I got stressed, I got distracted, and my postings stopped. But in many ways my situation is similar to a lot of NFL teams right now. We're seeing who will step up now when it counts. Which teams can't handle the stress, who are too injured, too beaten down, too far gone that they have no hopes of seeing January. While other teams are stepping up, they have players hurt or gone just like every other team out there, but they have players to fill that void. The struggle is no where near over for many of these teams.

Just like last year, Indy is once again going into Week 9 undefeated. They're once again surrounded by rumors that they'll go all the way to the Super Bowl. But this year they're also surrounded by rumors of doubt. Can they hold out, or will they once again choke when the game really matters? Has Indy changed from last year? Do they deserve the vote of confidence, or should everyone be skeptical of the Colts' chances of actually making it to the Super Bowl? Since they will choke, it's just a matter of when.

Who do you think is stepping up their game? Which teams do you think started off the season strong, but we won't even see come playoff time? Who is faltering? Who is surging? Here's my thoughts on a few teams; let me know what you think.
1.) Chicago - Yes, they've only lost one game, but before that loss they also nearly threw away the game to Arizona (who at the moment is considered the worst team in the NFL). They were barely able to hold off a team they should have thumped for the win. Were Miami and Arizona just flukes, or is Chicago going to step up their game?

2.) Denver - As much as it brings me great pain, Denver is surging. But I still firmly believe Jake Plummer will choke when it counts. Denver's defense also made some surprising mistakes during Sunday's game against Pittsburgh (how again was it the Steelers were favored to win this game?) Denver has Champ Bailey, who gives Denver the advantage every time. So, will Denver's offense be enough? Or will their defense be good enough to make up for a weak offense?

3.) San Diego - Can Phillip Rivers step up his passing game to create a more balanced offense for times when they may face a defense that will just shut down their running game? They're definitely surging, but San Diego definitely has some tough challenges ahead of them. They face Denver not once, but twice here within the next month. And can San Diego's defense step up when Shawne Merriman goes out to serve his penalty? San Diego leaves me with more questions than answers here. I think they can beat Denver, but I think it will by no means be an easy win--for either team.

Anyway, that's it for tonight, but in summary--I'm back, whether you missed my opinions or not. I'll be posting more. Tomorrow, we'll talk Hockey, NASCAR, and probably more football too. I'm stepping up my game again.

I actually do agree with your assessment. Oh, and welcome back, miss. I think you're the only good looking and sane one around here. Because I'm neither. And we're not speaking for Ron...

I'll speak for Ron, since I know him well.

"Good looking" fits him to a T, but sane he isn't. After all, he did say we should train the U's convicts in gunplay to make them more effective killers.

I agree with the commenter above.

Denver's surging...until they run into Indy and get folded like the little nerd being run for his lunch money by the bully.

As for Chicago, I hate to say this but...

Maybe Denny was onto something and we were all too caught up in the moment of his meltdown to realize it. Maybe this team isn't what everyone thought they were. Sunday night figures to tell a lot about where they are and let me state this for the record.

If the Giants minus Strahan, Arrington,
Toomer and Lord knows who else is gonna be hurt between now and Sunday can beat Chicago...the Giants win the NFC by default. I hath spoken.

By the by, good rant. :)
