Len Rants On The Fall Classic, Opening Night & Wrasslin...
- Last night, I watched the Celts/Cavs and predictably, most of the talking heads talked up Cleveland as being in the discussion with the four teams I covered in my preview column. But of course, proving true to form, game time came and after jumping out early on Boston (at which point I turned it off because I knew they were going to blow it)...I turned the game back on in the 4th and Boston was up.
Ya know what we learned even though it's just the season opener?
Don't doubt Len's basketball IQ. That's for starters. Secondly, no matter how hard you try to jam the square peg into a round hole, always remember it's still a SQUARE PEG IN A ROUND HOLE! I have no doubts that LeBron is going to go biblical this year. Note, on the 'Grand Scale of Devastation', Biblical denotes that what he's going to do this year is something that goes beyond what the human mind can and will comprehend. He got Braylon dealt to New York (thanks Bron, Sanchez needed a #1 he can throw to that can still GO) and he's not playing this year. I think he sent a huge message at the end of last season and I'll get to all of that...in a later column.
- I'm all but done with wrestling. Seriously. Between WWE Raw giving me the next few weeks of DX versus Cena-Hogan (wrestling fans who are in the know, know why I'm calling Cena that) and with what I just read going down on Smackdown, let me be blunt.
Do NOT buy Survivor Series. Seriously. Keep that money in your pocket, buy SVR 2010 and utilize that Create A Storyline to make your own shit that will be INFINITELY BETTER than what you see now. Oh and for those of you out there who haven't heard by now...
Hulk Hogan has signed with TNA.
*Shakes head with eyes closed*
Let me put this simply without wasting many sentences on this one. Know what I've been saying about Shaq being traded to Cleveland? This is that to the NTH degree. Only instead of driving out the 2nd best player in the game (which it most likely will, unless LeBron's an Ohio Grade moron), TNA's going to end up pissing off what little half of their fanbase has the intelligence to give their product a chance.
Oh and WWE...wake me when you give me a main event that does NOT include HHH, HBK or Cena. Seriously. As for my take on this "Guest Host" concept...it's fucking retarded. You've got folks who don't know the product and more often than not, are using WWE time to shill their own shit. Whether it's a race coming up in a week (as was with the two folks from the We Make Left Turns For Three Hours Association), a book, movie, or charity of some sort...it's just wrong. You got names of wrestlers (Kofi Johnston, when it's really Kofi Kingston, thank Joey Lagana for that faux pas) or events ("Summerfest", that came courtesy of Jeremy Piven over the summer) being screwed all the way up and gah. It's just ridiculous.
- The World Series starts tonight. Predictably, I've heard one 'the Yanks have an unfair advantage because they've got more money than everyone else' and ya know what? I'm going to do something rather uncharacteristic...I'm going to DEFEND the Yanks.
People forget that the Yanks haven't appeared in the Fall Classic in six years. SIX. In that time, they've blown an 0-3 LCS lead to the hated Red Sox and they've had the most successful manager in the modern era walk across the country to Los Angeles. This year moreso than years past, their additions worked out as they had hoped and A-Roid started to play more and more like A-Rod which has helped that lineup become infinitely more potent. Money can't buy World Series championships, 1997 Marlins not withstanding, but having the fattest wallet guarantees nothing in MLB. Hell, look at what a fat wallet and willingness to spend like a horny toad at a strip club is doing for Daniel Snyder. I rest my case.
Now, that said, tonight will be what I call a 'Salt In The Wound' night for any Indians fan. Why?
A) The starters for each team are not just former Indians, they're Cy Young winners for the last TWO YEARS. Both of whom were dealt in consecutive years.
B) Charlie Manuel is a former Indians skipper going for his 2nd World Series ring. Still doubt that my "Cleveland Theory" is valid?
Oh and for any of you the least bit curious, tonight's Fall Classic puts me in a bit of a quandry but not really. Do I root for the Ph-ucking Phillies, an in-division rival or do I go for the Yanks? An in-town rival that may or may not repeat next year should the Mets put everything together and make it to the Fall Classic? I said the other day I'd be rooting for the Yanks and even though the realist in me sees the Phils as being the better team...I'm hard pressed to bet against The Captain, A-Rod & a Yankee team (there's still quite a few stalwarts left from the days when Pinstripes reigned supreme) in this one. If Philly loses Game 1 tonight, can Pedro be trusted in Game 2 inside Coors Field East? Oh and Pedro, I lost all love for you the MINUTE you put on that P cap. Eat shit and die, Pedro. :-) Go Yanks.
