Done Deal? No, It Has Been Done.

Allow me to set the record straight on something once and for all. Last night didn't mark the end of the "Empire" as we knew it. 2004 ring a bell
people? The Evil Empire losing four straight to the Sawks enabling said Sawks to sweep past the Cards and win the World Series. Back in the day, that didn't happen. And figure the odds that just about every Yanks fan imaginable, wrote it off as a "eh, they had to win one sooner or later, right?" moment. But little did they know, that was the nail in the coffin for the vaunted "Evil Empire". Last night in all honesty, was nothing more than the final clump of dirt thrown on a grave that already had Torre's tombstone on it. The Boss finally got sick of sitting silent and decided to speak up, about three seasons too late. And let me be clear on something here, since I've probably followed more of this on a closer level than most can imagine...Steinbrenner's not the same guy who fired and rehired Billy Martin four times. He knows this too. And to be perfectly honest and this kills me to admit, but firing Torre isn't the answer. Hell, I'd much rather the Mets have fired Willie and thrown every bank imaginable to get Torre across the way because with the cast that's assembled in Queens right now, I had the utmost belief that Joe could win the pennant with these guys and even a World Series.

But, it's finally over for the Yanks. I mean, let's look at this shall we?

- If anyone thinks A-Rod's coming back next year, please, raise your hands. I'll come around and rearrange your thinking with a sledgehammer as you're clearly not doing it. The NY fanbase will never accept A-Rod as their own and simply put, for the paycheck they've given him...he's the highest paid non-achiever in postseason history. That's a very frightening distinction to have if you're playing on the Yanks. Rich made the remark about Jeter not producing and that's all fine and good, but here's the thing Rich.

Jeter's done it when it has counted, hence why New Yorkers are willing to give The Captain a pass that A-Rod couldn't pay for with a Platinum Mastercard or Visa. I predict that the Cubs (ESPECIALLY IF CUBAN BUYS THEM) will get him and will make a serious push towards the pennant next year with a nucleus of Big Z, Alfonso, A-Ram, Derrek Lee & A-Rod.
- I think we've seen the last of The Sandman. He's ancient and even though I'm fairly certain they don't want to totally rebuild, I'm thinking they've seen enough of Joba to put him in that closer spot and see if he can do a spot on Wetteland impersonation circa 1996-1998.
- The Rocket...oh yeah Yankee fans, money well spent on this lemon. Ya basically wasted money on this walking relic, congratulations on wasting a spot in the rotation that could've been reserved for...I dunno, someone who actually had an arm that would've held up for the Yanks.

See, here's the problem that EVERYONE (all you Yankee fans included) are totally
forgetting. When the Yanks were dominant in the latter 90s, they weren't trying to break the bank to do it. They did it with really great players and role players who came in, knew their roles and did their thing. They weren't trying to spend over a billion to get every big name imaginable as if we were playing Fantasy Baseball, they got people who wanted to win and could blend in well with the already existing pieces of the machine. Quality over quantity was the order of the day and remember, I was home for most of this so I know better than most of you on this matter. :P After 2000, you could clearly see that The Boss wasn't himself. Personally, 2004 was the breaking point. That's when you knew these weren't the "Yankees". The Empire died then when the Sawks came back and took four straight from them on their way to a World Series title. It just took now for things to hit people as to just how repugnant this organization
really is.

I don't see Torre coming back next year. He should be commended for the job he did this year, the average manager in the same spot would've had the Sawks winning the East by something comparable to what Secretariat did to the field in the Derby back in the 70s. I don't know who Cashman and Steinbrenner intend on bringing in to the Bronx Zoo, but they're going to miss Joe. Hell, I'm a Mets fan and I'd rather have him in there over Willie. (Can we trade? Please?)

A-Fraud's definitely not coming back. Boras must be smoking that Colombian white if he thinks a franchise will submit the gross national product of several third world countries to get someone who's great for 162 games and straight piss poor when it counts.

Since The Sandman's made it clear that he's only coming back if Torre's there, I think he'll be heading elsewhere. Attention Omar Minaya, you need a solid closer who's not going to give away games in the 9th. Mariano's your guy. He knows New York, knows how to close and simply put, there's nobody in the playoffs I'd rather have closing out a Game 5 or 7 than this guy. GET HIM NOW!
Ahem. That's all. So yeah, as a Mets fan, I recognize that New York will remain
Yankeetown until...Doomsday is the earliest. But this ain't the Evil Empire anymore. I think they're up in Foxboro calling themselves the Patriots. Or is it down in Texas posing as the Spurs?

*delivers a home-run swat upside Len's head with her barbed-wire-covered baseball bat*

THAT is for making me repeat myself after I already explained things earlier to Rich.

Len, when the hell are you going to realize that when it comes to the Yankees, your head is firmly wedged up your behind?

The issue with Torre isn't his managing ability, it's how much that managing ability is going to cost them if they renew his contract. Right now, they're hoping that they can convince him to agree to a short-term contract and/or a pay cut. If not, then they're going to have to decide if they want to stick with him or not.

And WHY do you think they're trying to do that?

Because they're hoping they can keep A-Rod--and keeping A-Rod means shelling out lots of money.

If you were following the Yankees as closely as you claim, Len, you'd have noticed that New York Yankees fans DON'T hate A-Rod anymore. Shit, after the season he had, they'd go to hell and back to keep him. They don't blame him for the postseason loss this year, either, because even though he wasn't spectacular, he wasn't the only one having trouble at the plate. They're willing to keep him around for a while longer if he wants to stay around.

It's also in A-Rod's best interest to stay around, at least for a few years more. The Yankees are his best chance to shake off that "can't win the big one" monkey off his back. This season alone proves how comfortable he's become with the team, and it's paid off for him bigtime. If he goes to another team, he's going to have to make adjustments all over again, and we've all seen just how making adjustments affects his hitting and fielding. If you think the New York fans hated him when he wasn't producing, the Sux fans would make that look like a schoolgirl crush. As for the Cubs, that's out of the question (at least for this year) because of the team's current ownership status. There's no guarantee Cuban's going to get his wish, and the current ownership isn't going to want to shell out anything near what Boras is going to be asking for.

As to Mo Rivera, at this point, he's in the same boat Torre's in. Much as we all love Mo, the fact is that he's not getting any younger and he's not the "lights out" closer he used to be. The Yankees would love to keep him, but the question again is for how long and how much?

Posada's return is a given--he had an awesome season at the plate and the Yankees need his veteran presence behind the plate with all the young arms we have now.

As for Clemens, there's no way in hell the Yankees are going to take a chance with him again, not for what they got for all the money they did shell out. Given the choice between financing A-Rod's return and financing Clemens, Roger doesn't stand a chance in hell. If he's smart, he'll retire and see if the Yankees (or someone else) will shell out that kind of money to make him the pitching coach. He'd stand a better chance of getting paid that way.

Finally, I will personally track you down and beat you to a pulp if you try to bring up Yankees history like you're the only one who ever remembers it. I told your sorry ass LAST YEAR that what made the Yankees successful in the past was a mix of good young farm system talent and experienced vets--and that's EXACTLY what they've been working towards getting now. Brian Cashman and the Steinbrenner sons finally got George to accept that trading away the farm wasn't the way to go, and now it's finally beginning to pay off. As I said to Rich, this year was the Yankees' equivalent of "rebuilding"--and next year, we're going to see even better results.

Now why don't you toddle your ass off to Omar's office and try to tell him how to run the Mets? After all, it wasn't the Yankees who bit the dust bigtime, was it? :p

Posted by Jade at 10/14/07 01:45:03

Damn, Mama Jade. I'm going to borrow a phrase from a friend of mine and just go... You showed his ass. And sorry Len, I stick by Jeter not producing, and like Jade said, too. The fans are getting behind A-Rod more, and Jeter is losing his grip on things. So, yes. Everything she said, applies.

Posted by Rich at 10/14/07 10:22:18

Watching the Yanks since 2003 has been like watching a drunk behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle, hitting everything in sight yet trying to convince everyone it's A-OK.

Look, face facts, it's over. Been over
and done with, all of you Yankee fans are in denial about how truly repugnant
things have deteriorated into. But as if I wasn't concise enough, let's try this one more time...

- Torre's gone. The mere fact this man
has had to endure the indignity of having his job threatened after bringing this franchise out of the muck
it was in when he got there is flat out repugnant.

I'm not even a Yankees fan and I feel insulted for the man all things told. I doubt very seriously he'll be back next season.

- Again, Jeter's produced in October so
I think he's earned his 'Leave Me The Fuck Alone' pass. A-Fraud has not. If your franchise decides to break every Swiss Bank imaginable to resign this Mr. May 2.0 diva...you clowns are truly deserving of the mediocrity you will get.

- Getting old, run down names as if we are playing a roto league is not doing it. Or did the bust signings of Moose,
Big Broken Down Unit and Fizzled Out Pocket Rocket not get through that skull of yours? You and the rest of your Yankee ilk haven't figured out that your boys won big by spending SMALL. Come to think of it, save for the Sawks in 04 (Greatest Postseason Choke EVER Yanks!!!)...most of the WS champs in this decade haven't been big spenders.

And yes, keep hope alive, whatever is left of it anyway. The Red Sox aren't afraid of you guys anymore. 2004 did that rather nicely. The American League's better, your boys managed to luck itself in only to be punked out by the Tribe. *Insert Nelson Munce laugh here* Enjoy rebuilding. I see a ton of it in the Yanks' immediate future.

Oh and as for the Mets, we'll be back on top of the division again next year.
Belie dat.

*Takes broken bat and chucks it.*

Len, you've been announcing the Yankees "over"-ness since last year. You haven't been right yet, and most likely, you never will.

You've also been proclaiming how wonderful the Mets were all year--until they tanked and you promptly started screaming for Willie's head. Considering that you've been trying to get Tom Coughlin fired for years unsuccessfully, I'd say Willie's job is guaranteed safe.

Face it, babe, your track record is less than desirable. At this point, teams are going to be begging you to pronounce them "over" just to guarantee a successful season.

Therefore, I hereby pronounce you Jinxmaster Len, deliverer of the dreaded Kiss of Anti-Doom, because at this rate, the longer you keep calling the Yankees "over", we're guaranteed at least another five rings. :D

Posted by Jade at 10/14/07 19:15:21

Ouchies.

Well, here's the thing Jadeykins and I love ya to tears but answer me this...

For all the millions (if you really wanna estimate it, let's talk billions with a 'B') your beloved Yanks have spent since 2000...

How many more rings has The Boss gotten
around his withering old fingers?

How many Octobers have ended with us cursing the "Evil Empire"?

What? None? Hmmm...okay, how many of the past Octobers have ended with the Yanks having their clocks punched just before the first pitch of the LCS? Three?! Get out of town!!!

Face facts, you're in a major state of denial much like the rest of your fellow Yankee brethren. You sit in your pinstripes clinging to the hope that next year will be better than the last, but they've just gotten progressively worst. I don't need to apply that "Kiss of Doom" to your boys,
them folks up in New England did that three years back for me. No, wait...I think that was Bend It Like Beckett in Game 6 when he shut the lights out in Yankee Stadium in the World Series.

So feel free to throw those 26 World Series Championships up in folks' faces, because that's all you and your kind can really talk about right now. The storied past, because the present really isn't looking too peachy. ;)

As far as Willie goes, the job he didn't do was beyond inexcusable. He didn't make the moves that were needed to be made to ensure A) last year ended
with the Mets/Tigers in the Fall Classic and B) to make damn certain that the Mets didn't earn a spot next to the 1964 Phillies for worst collapse
in baseball history.

But after putting this into perspective
and calming down a bit, I realize this could've been worse.

We could've been a game away from the World Series up 3-0 on the Phils and not have won another game. :P

Posted by Len at 10/15/07 12:15:32

I don't care for the Yankees, Red Sox or a specific baseball team in general, but I gotta drop this. I also haven't read the other comments so this might of been said already, but so long as the Yankees got jack to throw at people (And they will always) they got a shot. They won't be over for a long time regardless of how much one hates em.

Posted by Chris at 10/15/07 15:04:18

Len, if you call making it to the playoffs every year straight since 1995 and competing in the World Series 4 times during that time period "progressively worse", you're out of your ever-lovin' mind. There isn't a fan, player, manager, GM, or owner--INCLUDING YOU--who wouldn't trade their soul, their first-born and a few pints of blood for their team to have such a record.

If you want to talk "progressively worse" with the Yankees, you need to hop into the Wayback Machine and take a little tour from 1982-1993, when the Yankees not only didn't even get a whiff of the playoffs, they were usually found somewhere at or near the bottom of the American League standings. To add insult to injury, they manage to get the best record in the AL in 1994--and BAM! Baseball strike, no playoffs. Ask Don Mattingly how that felt--those were his years with the team. I'm sure he'd tell you that compared to that hell, this is gravy.

Seriously, get a grip and get a clue. The day comes that the Yankees spend another 12 years out of the playoffs, then you can talk to me about them being "over". Until then, you're going to keep getting a bat upside your head until you finally get some sense knocked in.

Posted by Jade at 10/15/07 16:55:45

Funny how nowhere in those numbers have we noted the following...

- 6 years of NO World Series rings. What? They tired of winnning em' for The Boss?
- Four straight years without a World Series appearance.
- Three straight ALDS eliminations and if not for The Boss finally speaking, you probably would've seen the Yanks swept out by the Tribe (damn you George!)

And oh yeah, how could I have forgotten
this one...

- The single greatest postseason choke in baseball history. How does one let a team win four straight to send them home for a LOOOOONNNNGGGGGG Winter of Discontent and no Pennant? The '0-NO!!
Yanks know. :)

So sure, keep knocking me upside the head with your bats. Hell, I'll cut down some trees and make ya some. Because the simple and plain fact of the matter is and remains you along with the rest of the Yanks are in a state of denial. Your boys have done a great deal of good in 12 years, but guess what?

- The Bravos won 14 straight division titles. Only got one World Series for it and haven't been to a Series since 1999.
- Your boys have been to the playoffs in 12 straight years, fine. But your team hasn't won a Series since the turn of the century and haven't seen a Fall Classic since Beckett turned out your lights in Game 6 of the '03 Classic.

Your boys are like Holyfield. You had your run in your prime and it was great, but that time's OVER. Time to file into the retirement home, turn the
keys over to the boys (Steinbrenner's) and watch this franchise continue its downward spiral.

Sure, they're going to spend because that's what they do. Hell, it's what they've been doing and what do they have to show for it? NOTHING. Teams that are spending less than they are seem to be prospering more than the Yanks and all the while, they're doing a lot with little to show for all the check writing they've been doing.

And on the A-Fraud note, the only reason fans changed their tune was because he had all of you duped into thinking if y'all got into the playoffs, he'd be what everyone wanted him to be. Now while he wasn't THE reason the Yanks were sent packing, he sure didn't light up the scoreboard and his bat didn't need a fire extinguisher now did it? If the Yanks give him what Bo-cash is asking for, I say you clowns deserve the mediocrity you will inevitably get. Seriously.

I'd say something along the lines of 'go back to what worked in the late 90s', but I'd be saying something you Yankee fans SHOULD already know.

Posted by Len at 10/16/07 11:55:01

Okay, Len, you've pushed me too far this time. Let me state this in plain, unadulterated English:

You are a complete and utter moron.

The Yankees have 26 World Series championships and 39 American League pennants. That's more championships than most teams in ANY sport, never mind completely outclassing any other team in baseball.

If you honestly think that a 7-year streak without a ring means that they will never win one again, you're an even bigger moron.

If you think the Yankees' 2004 postseason choke means anything other than a really embarrassing loss, you're the ultimate moron.

If you think you actually have a clue about what makes a successful team, you are the GOD of morons.

By your logic, the only way the Yankees can be considered successful is if they win the World Series each and every year. Much as that would be a lovely fantasy for us REAL Yankees fans, the REALITY is that no one wins all the time. To have the success rate the Yankees have had so far is an amazing feat as is. To say that just because they haven't won a Series recently makes them any less of a great franchise is not only illogical, it's goddamn stupid.

Maybe you should get your head out of your ass, stop trying to bury the Yankees before their time and maybe focus on your OWN team. You know, the one that you swore was going to win it all this year? Oh, wait--they choked, didn't they? I guess that means that they're done.

Posted by Jade at 10/16/07 17:56:59

Roger Clemens is a spinless, gutless, sack of dicklint. And Asshole-Rod, licks the sweat off an elephant's choada.

Why do I say this? Well, it's somewhat old news, but I just couldn't believe my eyes when Roger Clemens some time ago threw, and hit Alex Rios in the back of the T.O. Blue Jays. That happened 3 innings after there was a bench clearing skermish over pissed off Jays, such as Matt Stairs who wanted to eat A-Rod for breakfast for previously yelling "I got it" at Howie Clark during a pop up. Clark subsequently let it drop thinking that it was his own shortstop calling him off. What a classless, overpaid, bubblegum-compulsive-bubble-popping, self-indulged, fuckface. No wonder Jeter avoids him like Dick Cheney weilding a boner thats ready to shoot.

Then, Rocket-Ballsless-Clemens waits 3 innings later, after he knew he'd had the win in the bag, and hits mild mannered Alex Rios. I hope Clemens pitches next year, just so he can finally shit his depends on national t.v. trying to throw over 80 mph.

Viva the Jays forever!

By your logic, the only way the Yankees can be considered successful is if they win the World Series each and every year.

(Okay, these are your words. Now since mine aren't having the desired effect, allow me to present you with one of your own spelling it out so you can understand...ladies and gents, Hank Steinbrenner.)

"The objective of the Yankees since the '20s has been to win the championship every year, just as the objective of (Vince) Lombardi with the Packers was or (Bill) Belichick and the Patriots," Hank said. "None of us think we can win the championship every year, but that's the goal. Period."

I rest my case.
