A trifecta in baseball
How did they do?
Click the link, people.
Well, there was a HR party at Yankee Stadium tonight.
Unfortunately, someone forgot to invite A-Rod to the party.
EIGHT home runs were hit by Yankees in their 16-3 win over the White Sox. Out of the starting lineup, only A-Rod, Jeter and Andy Phillips were unable to send the ball out of the park. A-Rod in particular was 0-5, teasing the crowd with some monstrous fly-outs, each one looking a little closer to that wall.
To paraphrase the great Bob Uecker, juuuuuust a bit inside.
Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, Tom Glavine was managing quite well against the Brewers, giving up only two hits and one run in six innings plus. When he left the mound in the seventh, The Mets were ahead, 2-1. Hed done his job, it was time for the Mets bullpen to do theirs.
Somehow, Guillermo Mota didnt get the memo that said, Dont fuck this one up.
To be fair, he wasnt the one who put Prince Fielder on first and J.J. Hardy on second in the eighth; that was the fault of Aaron Heilman (who gave up the single by Hardy) and Pedro Feliciano (who hit Prince Fielder with a pitch). However, it WAS his job to make sure thats where they stayed.
Unfortunately for the Mets, Guillermo Mota has never seemed to grasp the concept of keeping a runner on base even when hes not the one responsible for putting him there. Hell, sometimes he cant even keep the ones he does put there.
He promptly gives up a double to Bill Hall, which ties the game for the Brewersand takes Glavines 300th win right out of his reach. The Brewers eventually won 4-2 in 13 innings, but the damage was already done.
If I were Glavine, Id be putting a call in to my old teammate Mike Piazza.
If I were Mota, Id be hiding out in Bud Seligs office for a while. Maybe he can get witness protection from the governments steroids inquisition panel.
Speaking of steroids, that leads us to one Barry Lamar Bonds.
Normally, I wouldnt have watched this game if youd paid me, but the Giants are playing the Dodgers tonight, which means the legendary Vin Scully is calling the game.
Barry Bonds should pay Vin Scully to call all his games until he breaks the record, because the only thing that almost (note that I said ALMOST) made me want him to hit that home run was the opportunity to hear Vin Scully call that home run. Vin Scully has the kind of voice that makes anything sound absolutely wonderful. If Vin Scully was calling the war in Iraq, people would want to keep our troops there just to hear him talk about it.
Vin Scully = GOD.
Unfortunately, I didnt get to hear Vin Scully call that home run tonight.
Fortunately, that was because Bonds went 0-2 with two walks (one intentional) and a strikeout before getting on base in the seventh on an error. A pinch-runner was brought in, and that was it for Barry.
The triple-threat went 0-fer tonight. Unless Bonds or A-Rod goes yard in the next four days, the next chance for the three feats to converge again will be on Sunday.
Im still hoping for two out of three.
