Fixing the Chase
As there is one race left until the field is set for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Chase for the championship, I'm visiting the topic of how to fix the chase. First, yes, the Chase has problems. My main problem with it is the idea that for the most part it will always be ten drivers in the chase. Yes, there is the little clause of "within 400 points of the leader or in the top ten in the points standings". But let's face it, with this clause there will always be just 10 drivers in the chase.
Now a lot of people think we should just automatically expand it out to the top 15 drivers. This won't fix anything. It'll be the same thing it is now, but with just a few more drivers. Fans will still be left disappointed if their favorite driver fails to make that top 15. It won't be exciting to watch to see who'll be in the top 15, less drivers will have the risk of falling out of the points standings and more drivers would just more easily clinch their spot. It would still leave the chase in need of a fix a year or two after the 15 drivers in the chase change would take place.
My plan is better and anyone who thinks that we just need to expand it out to the top 15 drivers in the standings is wrong.
First, make it all drivers with 600 points of the leader or the top 10 in point standings. With this one little change the anty is upped by drivers. Instead of just one driver left the week before the chase, we'd have two or three would could still make it into the standings. And at the same time, drivers already qualified for the chase will still be at risk to fall out of the chase with just one bad race. This means there is a good chance for 11, 12 or even 13 drivers to make the chase each time. There would be no automatic assumption that only 10 drivers will make the chase every single year.
Second, all the drivers not in the chase -- reset their point standings too. Let them fight from a blank slate who will win that million dollar bonus that comes with 11th place. This will also be great for teams who bring in new drivers for experience in those last chase races. Make it worthwhile for teams in and out of the chase.
With this two-part fix the race to see who makes the chase and the chase itself more exciting for everyone involved. I like the idea of the chase, mostly because of how they reset point standings to make things more interesting. But we should also do the same thing for the guys outside of the chase in the same method.
So, why NASCAR continually tries to make races safer, and as a result a little duller, we should spice it up a bit by making the championship race more exciting. It's a long season. Keep all your fans on their toes and cheering for their favorite driver all season long. In the race for the chase or not.
