Mitch Mustain's ego released from Arkansas
To recap this sorry chronicle, Mitch, Ben Cleveland and Damian Williams were a part of the storied 2005 Springfield High School in Arkansas. It was considered one of the top teams in the nation, along with winning the Arkansas 5A title that year. All three of the players were split in where to go. However, when Arkansas hired their high school coach, Gus Malzahn, as the offensive coordinator, the crew thought they were going to repeat their big men routine at the college level.
However, at Arkansas, the boys learned that Nutt rules the roost, unlike the situation at Alabama... The guys at first berated Nutt slightly. It was even documented in Mustain's book about the 2005 season and going to Arkansas, "The quarterback said Arkansas "would have a better chance of getting me" if Nutt were fired." That's a good way to appease yourself to Hog Nation, isn't it?
Ol' Houston had other plans. In other words, get used to handing off, Mitch. Darren's got more talent than you. Mitch and his boys didn't like it, either. They were a pass offensive. They were the shit, and how dare Nutt do this. Too bad that Nutt didn't care. Mitch and Damian saw themselves benched. Ben got with the program, so he stayed out when they needed him. To top it all, Malzahn ended up losing his authority over the offense.
Mustain was benched after his eighth win, due to his displeasure over his now reduced role. Nutt wasn't going to babysit any whiners. Williams saw his time split between bench warming and some option plays. However, the offense was clicking with McFadden as the showcase. However, they ended the season with three losses in a row. They also lost the Capital One Bowl, but what the offense found was peace of mind.
Nutt had the basis for a smash mouth team, and he told the Springdale boys that they could like it or leave. Nutt did for posterity try to keep Malzahn at Arkansas with a contract extension, but Gus had other ideas as he decided to leave for the U of Tulsa. Then the story got even more ridiculous. Let's go back to the meeting between Mustain's family and the AD, shall we...
From the Worldwide...: Last month, parents of Mustain and two other freshmen met with athletic director Frank Broyles amid concerns Malzahn didn't have enough control over the offense. One of the freshmen, receiver Damian Williams, has transferred to Southern California.
Fun, isn't it. Top that story off with a story that Mustain's nana (That's grandmother for you non-hicks.) throwing out claims of abuse that even the office shot down. Yeah, the Springfield gang story got a little bad for Arkansas. Malzahn left for Tulsa. Damian left to get paid as the possible replacement for Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett over at USCunts. Nutt got the vote of confidence as that same AD is talking extention. Let's not also forget McFadden's finalist status this past year and front running for this next season's Heisman.
Mitch's family's ego showing up bruised by assholes like us, ESPN, Deadspin, and even the Critic must've been too much for Mitch. He went to Nutt yesterday for a release. Nutt wasn't in too much of a hurry, but he gave him the release anyways. The gang member unaccounted for was Ben Cleveland who was off at a funeral. However, it's speculated that Ben's staying.
It's rumored that Mitch will probably sniff his former coach's ass over at U of Tulsa. Which makes you wonder, is it really worth it for control over an offense? I hope Beck Campbell and crew is used to the flat country of Oklahoma. It's a state where you really can see the next town because it's flat. Let's hope she's used to the lack of fanfare in Tulsa, because between Oklahomos and the Cowboys, nobody cares about Tulsa.
And a parting shot from Houston to Mitch: Nutt said he only wants players who want to be at Arkansas.
"I've told all the players, if they want their release, we'll grant their release," Nutt said.
Well, said, Nutt. Well said.
