R They Serious?
Anyway, my apologies to Louisville for the implosion you had to endure last night. While your win over WVU was a great one a week ago, it was just that. A week ago. Last night, you ran into a team that was hungrier, thirstier, and three touchdown advantage be damned...wasn't about to let the Cards take away its meal. Not in front of its home fans, not in front of a nationally televised audience that was just waiting for Rutgers to fall so they could all say in one collective voice...
"See, they're not as good as everyone said they were. The Big East isn't as strong as people said and we can go ahead and look forward to OSU & Michigan."
That silence you hear in various cities where one-loss schools are sitting is that of them not having a thing to say, because Rutgers silenced em'. Last night, with one second half comeback the likes of which not even the duo of Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler could probably describe, the Scarlet Knights sent a resounding message to everyone. Yeah, that's going for you folks up in Ann Arbor and Columbus too. Don't wanna include the Knights in your national title picture? We'll start knocking off whomever until we get what we want. Which brings us to the big ball of Crystal so to speak doesn't it? Since the BCS has come into creation, there've been a grand total of five teams I believe in the past six years that have gone undefeated and did not compete for the national title. Right about here is where I'm of the expecting an Auburn fan to come chiming in with, 'yeah, we were there two years ago' and they were. They were left out and someone else got in. As much as I'd love to see the R face the winner of the OSU/Michigan, I know better.
I know the Beyond Crap System won't let the R face off with the OSU/Michigan winner. And why? Because what the Crystal Ball has come to stand for is the 'You're Not Prestigious Enough To Compete For Me' Championship. Look at college basketball for a second. 64 teams do battle every year in arguably the best postseason tourney around. Think if there was a BCS influence on the tourney a team like George Mason would've been allowed to make the Final Four? HELL NO. Now, personally, I like the bowls. It gives me an opportunity to see teams I normally wouldn't see on a regular basis and I think it's a good chance for the smaller schools to shine on a national stage.
HOWEVER...
Changes need to be made to the system so that teams like Rutgers and Boise State are indeed given the same shot as Auburn, Cal, Florida and so on to compete for the richest prize in the sport.
But...this is a proud moment for Rutgers. A proud moment for anyone from the state of New Jersey because hey, they are your university. And while FSU might have produced my favorite football player of all time, the very first college football game I ever saw was between Rutgers and Temple some 14 to 15 years ago in Piscataway. Tell someone then that Rutgers would be where they are now and they would've laughed. Who's laughing now? Sure as hell ain't Louisville.
