prowd gradiate of the jemele hill skool of jernalism
The above is from Jemele Hills latest turd on the formerly great ESPN Page 2. Read it slowly. Read it carefully. Do you see whats wrong with it?
I do, and it was so glaring that I stopped reading the column and started working on this post. So as not to spoil your fun, Ill supply the answer below the cut.
From Jack Lynchs A Guide to Grammar and Style: Use an in place of a when it precedes a vowel sound, not just a vowel. That means it's "an honor" (the h is silent), but "a UFO" (because it's pronounced yoo eff oh).
You graduated from journalism school, but you dont know simple elementary grammar? Or were you trying to Scoop it up a little by getting thuggish when you said a NFL rather than the correct an NFL in that snippy little sidebar? If you werent a damn fool, Id chalk it up to some sort of metacommentary on the lack of education athletes receive while supposedly playing for institutions of higher learning. Unfortunately, youre a damn fool, so Ill chalk it up to ignorance.
Not only your ignorance, Jemele, but the ignorance of your editors at Page 2 for letting the obvious error make it to print. I'm well aware that this is picky, but for fuck's sake they're getting PAID to edit these documents, and this is elementary school grammar. I police this site more rigorously for grammar problems, and I'm not even getting paid!
The finest opinion website on the Internet, ladies and gentlemen.
