Norv Turns the Corner Towards San Diego

Despite the fact that earlier this week, the Bolts claimed that they had just finished round one of interviews and might still add in future candidates, ESPN.com is reporting San Diego Chargers have agreed in principle to hire Norv Turner as their new head coach.

This will be Norv Turner's third go-round as a head coach. He previously coached the Oakland-Los Angeles Raiders and the Washington Redskins, both with losing records overall before Norv was fired. Hopefully coaching the team considered to have the best offensive talent in the league helps.

Rich, your prediction came true. Now, is this good news or bad news for a Chargers team who didn't even attempt to lure Pete Carroll out of USC before hiring Norv? Personally, not knowing more than just stats about Norv, I'll wait and see how he does as head coach for the Bolts for half a season before I make my opinion.

As odd as this sounds, Norv Turner>Pete Carroll in the pro ranks. Pete Carroll was quite possibly the worst pro coach in quite some time.

Well, I'd rather take my chances on a coach who has had dominant winning seasons somewhere (even college) then a guy who had two horrible head coaching job seasons in the past. And SF isn't exactly any good either.

Actually Len, you're wrong on that one, too. Norv had a respectable winning record in the pros as a head coach. Washington was a playoff contender each year he was there until the end.

Oakland was a situation that not even the great Lombardi or Shula could fix. San Fran is now hopeless.

Also, Pete Carroll sucks in the pro ranks because he suffers from the Saban/Spurrier syndrome. Just because he did a little bit in college doesn't mean a pro athlete is going to listen to a fucking thing he says.

Norv's career isn't entirely hit or miss. In fact, Norv has two rings from his days at Dallas. This SD offense is very similar in style to the "America's Team" he had. The fact that LT has worlds of talent doesn't hurt, either. He'll be alright until they see the next group of coaches leave their teams.

Let me correct the record. Norv went 49-59-1 at Washington. He missed the playoffs a few times. The playoff he did make was a loss to that steamroller in Tampa Bay.

So, I'm wrong on the playoff record. Still 49-59-1 isn't bad compared to what we have seen in the pro ranks. Pete's pro record is 33-31, but he missed playoffs just as often as Norv did. Pete made it to two Wild Cards, and then left just as quickly. He ended up fired because he missed it two years in a row.

We know how the Patsies love that...

Still, Pete saw his success in college, and he isn't going to press his luck after he saw Saban take the money and run. He'd be crazy to.

Norv's got a .415 record as a head coach, according to ESPN. Personally, I would have rather given a less-experienced coach a try rather than go with a record of barely mediocre proportions. After seeing what Pete Carroll did with the Pats, I'm not exactly convinced a second go-round in the pros is the right thing for his career, either. He's better off being a legend in the making at USC.
