A Repugnant End To A Repugnant Season.
Going back to their Super Bowl campaign seven years ago, they haven't advanced out of the Wild Card round since Kerry Collins was at QB and Fassel Fuel was flowing through this offense. Food for thought people. Anyway, I'm past pissed about the stupid penalties from a team that's supposed to be coached by one of the staunchest disciplinarians in the NFL. That's like being pissed because the baby hasn't quite figured out how to use the potty yet, despite constant efforts to teach the rugrat. He'll learn in due time, but I digress. I'm pissed for the following reasons...
A) Tiki played his ass off and because of the fact that the Giants on D made Brian Westbrook look like Ricky Watters in his prime (Sorry, the Eagles haven't exactly had great rushers in its history) with their one arm flailing tackle attempts and the like... Tiki's done.
B) Ever since that loss to Chicago, the only thing this team has managed to do consistently is basically take potshots at each other through the media and when they got bored doing that, they took shots at the media for reporting the blatantly obvious to the world.
C) Eli in his third year within the league has done nothing but regress as a QB. Great timing too, considering that Phillip Rivers might be three wins away from joining Big Ben as a Super Bowl Champion and Ben's had a ton of post-season success. Eli's still searching for post-season win #1.
Oh, Coach Dummy giving him the dreaded "vote of confidence" halfway through the year and slide wasn't exactly a great help.
What pisses me off is that in spite of all of the above, the NFC was so damn dilapidated from top to bottom that this team could've ran through it and still won it all. Not the Super Bowl, but at the very least a trip to Miami next month for the Big Game. Instead, all they get is booted out of the playoffs by Green Akers and run out by Brian "I Forgot This Guy Can Run The Football" Westbrook oh...did I forget to mention that Donovan McScramble was on the damn sideline sporting a Grizzly Adams look?
The flat out truth of the matter is that this team underachieved in a major way. There's nothing that can even warrant Coughlin keeping his job this coming year, I don't care who they can get in a year's time. Eli regressed as a QB, the team's morale deteriorated from the inside out and injuries aside, I fail to believe that this depth chart was that damn thin to the point where everyone just forgot how to play the game of football. I refuse to acknowledge Coughlin as a "good football coach".
No "good football coach" would accept his team committing three damn penalties back to back to back on what would be the final drive of their season, as acceptable. No "good football coach" would accept a team that went from being division champions a year ago, to basically turning on each other and just flat out resembling the Chernobyl All Star team (They melted down in the regular season). No "good football coach" would EVER give his young QB, while going through a tough stretch, the ever dreaded "vote of confidence". I know Eli's from Mississippi and all, but he's not exactly from the third damn world. To even put the possible idea in his head that he might be benched, is akin to walking through hell with kerosene drawers on.
There was a three game decline between this year's craptacular finish and the one from a year ago. To be brutally honest, after last year's 23-0 crushing at the hands of the Panthers I was angry but encouraged because of the progress that Eli showed and the moves that the G-Men made in the offseason to take the next step back to prominence within a truly weak Non Football Conference. After a 6-2 start, a 2-7 finish coupled with the loss that shouldn't have been in Philly, I can't justify keeping this guy for one more year. I can't. Make way for a run at Cowher, or maybe a shot at drawing the Tuna back to NY... Anything.
This team's on the cusp of being a legit contender to go back any further. Plaxico isn't feeling this guy. I think Eli's too much of a choirboy to really speak his mind on the matter, and every major leader on this team in one way or another has spoken out openly against Coughlin. Ernie Accorsi's gone and my hope is that once they figure out who the new guy will be, his first official act will be to call Cough-lin into his office and do his best Vincent Kennedy McMahon impersonation by telling this rat bastard in no uncertain terms...
"YOUUUUURRRR'EEEEEE FFFFFIIIIIRRREEEDDDDD!!!"
